Financial Assistance

All of the local groups that we know of providing direct financial assistance, including Buckingham Mutual Aid, have run out of funds or are no longer accepting requests. However, we encourage you to take advantage of the government programs below if you can.

Pandemic Unemployment

If you qualify we highly recommend applying for Pandemic Unemployment, as the addition $600 per week will run out July 31st. These benefits are available to traditional employees who were laid off due to COVID-19, but also other who were effected including "gig", contract, and farm workers. You can apply now and receive benefits from previous weeks.

IRS Stimulus Checks

Have you gotten a stimulus check from the IRS? If not, see if you qualify as a "non-filer" and you can simply submit a form online. For more information go to: https://www.irs.gov/coronavirus/non-filers-enter-payment-info-here.

Mobile Food Pantry in Dillwyn

Blue Ridge Area Food Bank has a mobile food pantry in Dillwyn at Crystal Cathedral (16764 Oak St, Dillwyn, VA 23936) on the second and forth Friday of every month from 9:45-11:30am.

If you are unable to make it, Buckingham Mutual Aid may be able to find someone to deliver this food to you.

Maysville Presbyterian Food Pantry

You can pick up groceries at the Maysville Presbyterian food pantry. Hours are not fixed, so call beforehand to set up a time. They are very friendly and provide BMA food for deliveries.

Piedmont Senior Resources

If you are over 60, PSR is providing aging-adults that qualify with deliveries of groceries, hot meals, and sanitary supplies to you. They can also provide house aides, lawn mowing, transportation for medical appointments, and other services.

Donor Diapers

If you need diapers for a child, Donor Diapers does free diaper giveaways in Charlottesville.

All you need to bring is proof of life: birth certificate, insurance card, birth letter.

Housing / Rent

Virginia Homeless Solutions Program

If you are experiencing or at risk of experiencing homelessness, you can call the STEPS hotline at 1-855-955-5501 (not our area code, but will be answered by someone in Farmville).

They can help with shelter, rapid-rehousing assistance and case management.

Virginia Rent and Mortgage Relief Program

RMRP may provide financial assistance for rent or mortgage payments for eligible households.

If you are in Buckingham County call STEPS to see if you qualify at 434-315-5909 ext. 206.

We're working on finding a more recent tenant's rights guide for COVID-19, as the situation is rapidly changing. This document has some information about the legality of evictions in VA during COVID-19.

Heating / Cooling


EnergyShare aids with paying heating and cooling bills of families in need through a partnership with Dominion Energy.

SCVNN is a collective of area nonprofits coordinating to support our community and each other. Their website has a large searchable database of resources and non-profits in our area.

Food Pantry Locater

Intellihelp is a Facebook group where you can post things you need from Amazon, and others in group might buy them for you. We have heard at least one local success story using Intellihelp.

There is also an Intellihelp group for pet supplies.

Farmville Cares

Farmville Cares is a network of volunteer assistance for things like grocery shopping, a friendly conversation or picking up prescriptions.

You can call their hotline at (434)414-1188 or visit their website to submit a request online.

Richmond Mutual Aid Disaster Relief

MADRVA does grocery deliveries and provides other assistance to folks that live in Richmond and surrounding areas. You can find out more about current programs on their Instagram.
